Will a Series E Lens Work on a Nikon FG?

    About Series E Lenses

    • Debuting in 1979, Nikon’s Series E lenses were designed as lower-cost lenses for amateur photographers. Nikon lowered the cost to produce these lenses in various focal lengths by using less expensive parts, including some plastic. They were not sold under the Nikkor brand name, which Nikon reserved for its professional-grade lenses. Series E lenses must be focused manually.

    About the Nikon FG

    • The FG, a single-lens reflex camera that used 35 mm film, was introduced in 1982 as Nikon’s first camera with a “Programmed Auto” mode. This mode allows the camera to set the shutter speed based on which aperture, or f-stop, was set on the lens, making the camera operate similar to compact, point-and-shoot models. Like the E Series lenses, the FG was aimed at amateur photographers.

    How to Mount

    • To mount a Series E lens on the Nikon FG, locate the small black dot on the inside end of the lens and line it up with a similar dot found on the camera body at the lens opening. Begin twisting the lens counter-clockwise. You will feel the lens sliding into the camera body’s mounting grooves. Continue twisting until the lens clicks into place.

    How to Focus

    • Grasp the lens focusing ring with your thumb and index finger and slowly twist it to the right or left until the picture in the FG’s viewfinder looks clearest. The FG has a split-image rangefinder, meaning you see a center circle with a line through it in the center of the frame. When a picture is out of focus, the part of the image in the center circle will appear broken apart. When the picture comes into focus, that part of the image will realign.
