How to File Tax Returns Early
- 1). Determine if you need to file a tax return. In some cases, it is not necessary to file taxes. If you have earned income in the previous year or had investments, you most likely will need to file a tax return.
- 2). Gather your personal information. In order to file a tax return, you need Social Security numbers for you and your dependents, your address and driver's license number.
- 3). Gather proof of wages and monies earned during the previous year. You need your W-2 forms, 1099s and proof to support any deductions you plan to claim. If you have not received your W-2 form yet, you can wait for it or use information from your last pay stub for the year to file your tax return.
- 4). Select an online tax program to submit your tax return. Many companies offer secure and rapid transmission of your tax return to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You can find a list of companies offering e-file on irs.gov.
- 5). Fill out the e-forms to file your tax return early. Use the personal and financial information you gathered to properly fill out your tax return. If you have any questions about any of the forms, refer to the Help section on the website.
- 6). Check the e-forms for accuracy. Before submitting your tax return to the IRS, it is important to check that all of the information you entered is accurate. Submitting incorrect information can possibly lead to underpaying or overpaying your taxes.
- 7). Download and print all of the e-forms. You may need to reference the return in the future.
- 8). Submit the e-form for transmission to the IRS. After ensuring the accuracy of the return, you have the option to mail the forms in or e-filing. Choosing to e-file will ensure that the tax return is received early and securely.
