How to Fix Torn Speaker Foam

    • 1). Carefully slide the razor blade under the edges of the old speaker foam, releasing it from the cone and surrounding basket.

    • 2). Slip the razor blade parallel to the cone under the edge of the center dust cap, popping it off the cone and revealing the voice coil and magnet. Leave a small section attached. Tape it back against the cone with a small piece of painter's tape.

    • 3). Remove and discard the old torn foam. Pull up the old cardboard or cork gasket from around the edge of the basket. Scrape away any old adhesive from the cone and and basket with the razor blade, making it as smooth as possible.

    • 4). Slide the included cardboard shims evenly between the voice coil and magnet pole piece.

    • 5). Apply a liberal layer of adhesive around the edge of the cone. Place the surround directly down onto the edge of the cone. Ensure that you do not shift the surround excessively while aligning it.

    • 6). Pull out the shims from the voice coil gap after the surround has dried. Run another layer of adhesive around the inner ring for the center dust cap. Remove the tape and lay the cap straight down over the adhesive.

    • 7). Place a bead around the basket of the speaker. Press the new gasket, included with the kit, in place.
