Plants Used for Herbology
- Echinacea is used to help build and strengthen the body's immune system. Folks suffering from the common cold or flu may benefit from taking echinacea. Echinacea has also been shown to improve skin problems such as acne or boils. This herb can be found at most health food or grocery stores.
- St. John's Wort is used primarily to alleviate depression, sleep disorders and anxiety. It is consumed in tablet form or tea. Other uses for St. John's Wort include the treatment of burns, insect bites and wounds. This herb can be purchased at many grocery and health food stores.
- Ginkgo Biloba has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including multiple sclerosis, asthma, bronchitis and tinnitus, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine,or NCCAM. Studies also suggest that ginkgo helps prevent Alzheimer's disease. Extracts are taken from the ginkgo leaf and made into capsules, teas or tablets.
- Garlic, which can be consumed by taking a tablet, or eaten raw or cooked, is commonly used for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. It's also a preventative for heart disease and certain types of cancer, including colon and stomach cancers, according to NCCAM. Garlic is a common food item found in the produce section of grocery stores.
- Saw Palmetto can be used to treat pelvic pain, bladder disorders, hair loss and hormone imbalances. This herb comes in various forms, including whole berries or dried fruit. Saw Palmetto also can be consumed through a tablet, capsule or a tea drink.
- Other commonly used therapeutic herbs are ginseng, goldenseal, aloe, Siberian ginseng and valerian.
