How to Repair a Faucet That Leaks

    • 1). Turn off the water by turning the water valves. If you are going to replace parts, you don't want water bursting out of the pipe.

    • 2). Remove the faucet by unscrewing the nut with a wrench. Remove the old washer and throw it out. Replace it with a new washer of the correct size and put the faucet back together.

    • 3). Unscrew the valve from the nipple in the wall if replacing the washer doesn't fix your problem.

    • 4). Put a bucket under the pipe and have someone briefly turn on the water valves so all the brown, rusted water can escape.

    • 5). Remove the nipple with the wrench.

    • 6). Install your replacement valve where the old one went, using the wrench to put the nipple back into its position.

    • 7). Run the water to test for leaks.
