Women's Hairstyles in the '80s

The classic women's hairstyle of the 1980s is the perm. Popularized on television shows like "Dallas," it is typically teased to be as large as possible and held in place with generous amounts of hairspray. The bangs were also generally very tall as well. Some men would style their hair this way, but it was primarily a female hairstyle. - This asymmetrical hair, though recent, is reminiscent of '80s fashion.Ian Gavan/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
Seen at an extreme on Cyndi Lauper, who wore one side of her hair long and the other practically shaved, asymmetrical styles were popular as well. Originally part of the New Wave scene, asymmetrical styles later caught on with many others. In addition, some girls had ponytails on one side of the head as part of the look. This hairstyle was very popular with men as well, much more so than perms. - While not technically a hair style, the banana clip was a major hair accessory in the '80s. It was used, often in conjunction with perms, teasing and hairspray, to create a lion-like mane of hair on the back of the head. It was similar to a ponytail, but instead of the hair being held in a small circle by a band, the clip created a wide, flat ponytail.

Creating wavy hair by heating small sections, crimping was often used with other popular hairstyles. Bangs or a side ponytail might be crimped, or one side of a asymmetrical bob. Some people crimped all their hair, turning their hair into long strands of frizz. Like the other hairstyles, crimping was also done by men, but it remained primarily a female hairstyle.
