How to Make a Pewter Color in Oil Paintings
- 1). Place a pewter object in a room with good or natural light. Use the object as a color reference as you mix the various colors that are required to create the color of pewter.
- 2). Squeeze dabs of white, black and ultramarine paint onto your palette.
- 3). Mix the black and white paint until you have a medium gray color.
- 4). Mix a little bit of ultramarine into the gray paint to add a cool tint to the color and make it look more like pewter.
- 5). Mix your pewter-colored paint sample well and test it by painting on a piece of throwaway paper. Compare the color that you have created with that of your pewter object and make color adjustments to your sample as necessary, by adding tiny amounts of the colors that you have previously used.
- 6). Study the effect of light and shadows on your pewter object, and apply the pewter color to the canvas. Mix white into the color on the canvas to create lighter shades, and apply a darker gray to the shadow areas. This will imitate the metal shine of pewter.
