How to Cite a Photograph in APA

    • 1). Locate the name of the photographer, the title of the picture, and the date that the picture was taken. In an ideal situation, these three bits of information should be readily available. However, sometimes that is not the case. There are several different formats for completing an APA citation of a picture based on what information is available.

    • 2). Write out your APA citation (with all available information) as follows:

Author (Author's Role). (Year of Creation). Title of Work [Type], Retrieved Month Day, Year, from: URL.

    • 3). Exclude any sections on the citation if the information is unavailable. For instance, if the image is without author, create the citation just as previously described, but with the exclusion of the author portion.

    • 4). Write a description of the work and when and where it was retrieved if no specific information is available about the picture. This type of APA citation should read as follows:

[Subject and type of work]. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from: URL

    • 5). Indent all lines of text after the initial line in APA format.
