Henna Tattoo Ideas
- Henna tattoos offer the sensuous appeal of body art without the pain or permanent commitment of having an image drilled into your skin. For many people, the appeal of henna tattoos lies in their connection to India, Africa, and the Middle East. Traditional henna tattoo designs, or mehndi, often incorporate intricate designs of swirls and flowers that echo the art, architecture, and fabrics of these lands.
- Display henna body art on either the back of the hands or the palms. Traditional mehndi artists often create elaborate designs that scroll from the forearm along the wrist onto the hands. Some designs have the appearance of bracelets or rings. In some cases the effect is as if the person wearing the tattoo is sporting a lacy glove. In traditional Indian wedding ceremonies, the bride's mehndi tattoo contains the names of bride and groom concealed within flowers and swirls. The groom must find both names on the wedding night.
- Henna tattoos are often applied to the sides and/or top of the feet. You can have a henna tattoo "ankle bracelet" or a design which climbs up and winds around the calf. Especially in summer weather, you can enjoy having bare, decorated feet. Although traditional mehndi tends to involve flowers along with abstract, intricate swirls, you can choose something more representational, such as a snake winding around your leg.
- If you are considering a permanent tattoo, but are unsure of the effect, give your tattoo idea a henna "trial run." Have a rose applied to your shoulder or a dragon to your back. Let a fairy perch below your neck. See how that tribal cuff will look on your bicep. Although the extremities are more traditional locations for mehndi, feel free to branch out and experiment.
