Backyard Chicken - Things You Need to Know About Backyard Coops

Everyone has gone mad! Did you know that people are now starting to raise chickens in their own backyards? What is this all about? Well I'll tell you! A few of the many reasons people are choosing to have backyard coops are:
  • Low maintenance and inexpensive.
  • Chemical Free Eggs that tastes delicious!!
  • Fun and exceptionally entertaining pets.
Chickens in the Backyard? I know if you have not met anyone who has tried it you probably think it's completely out there.
But believe it or not, chicken are one of the best pets to have.
Not only do they offer the things stated above, but also:
  • Backyard coops don't smell (of course you will have to clean them, but with a little direction and a great set of plans, this is not a problem).
  • Not only can you raise chickens for their eggs, but also for their meat, there are several breeds available that are perfect for both!
  • Did you know that chickens are a great source for chemical free pest control? Hate all those nasty bugs in your backyard? Well chickens don't' they love to snack on bugs!

Coop: First you of course must build a chicken coop.
This doesn't have to be extravagant but does need to be functional.
If you're going to spend any money on your coop, find the best set of plans for building one and use it there.
Supplies can come cheap, but a great design will make your life much easier.
  • Food & Water.
    Most popular are layer feed pellets.
  • Exercise.
    A decent size run for exercise is important for everyone even chickens.
  • Light.
    Generally speaking it's a good idea to provide somewhere between 12-14 hours of light.
    Using a 25 watt bulb can make up for the sun when it is down.
  • Ventilation.
    Both for the good of you as well as your chickens.
  • Warmth.
    Some chickens are hardier than others and if you're in a cold climate please do check to see which chickens are best for you.
    Make sure to provide all chickens with insulation and warmth on those chilly days.
