Upgrading Living Conditions in Urban Slums
When upgrading living conditions in the World's Urban Slums what must be considered? Recently, our online think tank took a look at many of the issues in upgrading the Urban Slums in Nairobi, Kenya.
Some folks had suggested bringing in animals to the slum, other suggested making brick buildings instead of cement buildings.
Indeed, I am concerned with bringing in farm animals to the slum.
If there are people with not enough to eat, how can you afford to feed an animal and what about Anthrax and international terrorists coming into the slum to recruit? Everyone agrees that the slums need toilets but also we must be concerned with plugged up toilets with dirt floors.
If you have ever read some of the problems even in the US building projects, these people will destroy anything you build.
That is the reality.
They will.
You cannot consider their activities or perceptions with what you might do in that situation; different ball game.
It is interesting to be advising this to a "bleeding heart" who tells everyone else to see the other person's perspective (in my opinion) especially when the committee members are not seeing it from the perspective of those they help.
Some folks realize that these homes must be made super strong to withstand anything.
Some suggest that Super Slums like Kibera in Nairobi Kenya be torn down and rebuilt with brick structures so the Wolves cannot huff and puff and blow the houses down.
To those committee member's points about the potential of using brick to build the houses; good idea, because one article mentioned a girl's family, now a University Student, built a brick house in 1952 and it is still there.
That gives hope for something permanent.
A brick building is doable, should be mentioned in any revitalization reports.
Of course we need to realize that mortar can also be used as an explosive, so can manure and the more animals in the slums the more manure plus the human waste in the ditches or sewer.
Slums are used to recruit by guerrillas and terrorists, it is their number one breeding ground.
With regards to brick VS concrete; Kibera Slum is on the River and we can take silt from up the river to make the concrete, float it down or up river if we have too, to make the sewer treatment plant and the concrete "tilt-up" houses.
Construction of this type, tilt-up, is quick up housing and would be a relevant plan, as you can build those "Super Fast".
I am thinking total speed.
Tear down a section bulldoze and housing is up in a few days after sewer pipers and water pipes are laid in place.
I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought.
The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007.
I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.
