Create Your Slab-Built Pitcher

Slabs have a great deal of potential as a method of creating pottery, including pitchers. Begin by wedging two to four pounds of clay, depending on the size of the pitcher you wish to make. Be certain to use clay that is in the same maturation range as the glazes you will be using later.

Our example pitcher was made using two mid-range clay bodies, one tan and the other white. They were matched beforehand in regards to their shrinkage, then wedged together to create a marbled effect.

The pitcher was glazed using Amaco's Salt Buff and Albany Slip Brown glazes, and Spectrum's Nova Stoneware Clear glaze. The pitcher was fired to maturation at cone 5.
