The Domestic Violence and the Immigrant Women
In the month of April, 2013, the Gang of Eight members drafted a much debated Comprehensive Bill addressing few key immigration issues as our current immigration system is not effective and fails to respond few critical issues like border security and proper path to citizenship for immigrants.
In the June 2013, the Senate cleared the bill with 68-32 votes, but the Republicans in the House were against the bill as they considered the pathway to citizenship proposed in the bill was much liberal for the illegal immigrants who disrespected the US laws.
They regarded the bill awful.
Cut in January 2014, the republicans who were opposing the Comprehensive bill are preparing for some alternative solutions.
They are drafting another perspective of the Senate bill which mainly focuses on the border security measures and a pathway to citizenship.
A pathway to citizenship addresses 13 years of the path for undocumented immigrants to become the US citizens.
Here, the sad story starts.
The 13 years of pathway to citizenship demands undocumented immigrants to produce the continuous employment proofs to get a permanent residence status.
The Senate bill totally ignores the undocumented immigrant women.
When the undocumented immigrant women who crossed the border in hopes to earn their livings and send money to their families, mainly their children living miserably in their home countries, they did not know the fact that they were crossing the borders unlawfully.
They considered only one thing; to earn their and their family's livings.
According to sources, most of the immigrant women, working as caretakers or as nannies become victims of domestic violence or human trafficking.
They don't complain to officials because they feel the threat of immediate deportation.
They silently suffer the humiliation and discrimination from the employer just because they lack some legal documents which may help them get rid of deportation.
In the Senate bill, they have replaced a family based visa system with a merit based visa system which invites highly skilled educated immigrants to the United States citizenship.
According to critics, this step will close the main door of getting legal status for immigrant women.
This step will work as a disadvantage for people who belong to the nation with poor opportunities and mostly, for women.
Unfortunately, both the parties in the House, who have different ideologies for all the immigration issues, support a merit based visa system.
In the final immigration legislation, there must be a strong provision addressing the immigrant women who are the victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.
The legislation should give an immediate legal status to the victim so that they don't have to go back to the employer to earn their livings.
This act will boost the confidence in the immigrant women and help them live a better life in the United States.
According to the critics, immigrant women, working as the domestic caretakers or the nannies are contributing to the society in a way that the short seekers can't visualize.
The immigrant women will contribute to American society in the long run by taking care of elders, raising future generation and performing household chores.
