The Mayo Clinic Diet - Diet Review - Pros and Cons

Warning: There are two "Mayo Clinic Diets" out there.
The first one was a bogus diet with an emphasis on eating grapefruits that was circling around for years, but was never a plan endorsed by the real Mayo Clinic.
The second, which is the one being reviewed is based on the new book published by Good Books called, "The Mayo Clinic Diet: Eat Well.
Enjoy Life.
Lose Weight.
" Overview The Mayo Clinic Diet: Eat Well, Enjoy Life, Lose Weight is an official weight loss program endorsed by the famed Mayo Clinic.
Editor-in-Chief of the book Dr.
Donald Hensrud, M.
D.
, says, "It's the healthiest way to lose weight quickly there is.
" The plan breaks down into two phases, the Lose It phase which lasts two weeks, in which you are expected to lose 6-10lbs of fat.
And the Live It phase, in which an ongoing weight loss of 1-2lbs is expected.
At the core of the plan is a focus on the Mayo Clinic food pyramid, (not to be mistaken with the USDA Food Guide Pyramid) and advocates a daily intake of unlimited fruits and veggies, 4-8 servings of carbs, 3-7 servings of protein, 3-5 servings of fat, and up to 75 calories a day of sweets.
The other emphasis is on exercise and maintaining an active lifestyle.
Pros
  • Sensible: This is a no nonsense approach to dieting; grounded in proven science.
  • Realistic: The food program itself, along with the goals they look to achieve are both realistic and doable.
Cons
  • One Dimensional: Being overweight is simply not a matter of calories in vs.
    calories out.
Or even what type of foods you eat.
A great deal has to do with motivation, and the ability to curb compulsive behavior.
The Mayo Clinic Diet does not focus on these factors.
Bottom Line This diet represents a fine alternative in the battle of the bulge.
It offers a safe sane sensible approach to weigh loss, along with an emphasis on moderate exercise.
Some might get better results with a more personalized approach that has a great emphasis on motivation and portion control.
