How to Prevent a Mildew Smell

    • 1). Hang damp and wet clothing up to dry. Do not let wet clothing sit for long periods of time. Mildew will begin to form on the clothing causing stains and odors.

    • 2). Stretch shower curtains out after use to dry. Mildew thrives in the crevices of damp shower curtains. Keeping them closed will help dry the shower curtain while preventing mildew and its odor.

    • 3). Keep the washing machine lid open when not in use. Washing machines are damp and dark locations, which make them a possible breeding ground for mildew. Leaving the lid open will air out of washer and lower the risk of mildew and musty odors.

    • 4). Open the doors and windows in your home on warm days. This will provide air circulation and ventilation, which will remove musty odors in the air.

    • 5). Run a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air. Without moisture, mold and mildew cannot grow and create a musty smell.

    • 6). Remove mold and mildew from items as soon as possible. Use full-strength white vinegar to clean mold and mildew.
