How to Transparency Stain Kitchen Cabinets
- 1). Remove the cabinet hardware, and put them aside. Use a screwdriver to remove hinges, door handles and anything holding the doors. Pull out the drawers, and lay them flat on a drop cloth.
- 2). Sand any scuffed areas with 150- or 220-grit sandpaper. Use a hand sander, and work in the direction of the grain. Wipe off the dust with a damp towel. Press masking tape into the bottom of the drawers and the inside of the doors if you do not want to stain those areas.
- 3). Cut carpet remnants into 4-by-3-inch rectangles. Using carpet remnants will minimize brush marks in your stain. Put on gloves to keep the stain off your hands. Dip a carpet remnant into the transparent stain, and rub against the wood. Cover all areas thoroughly.
- 4). Wipe off excess stain after 10 minutes with a soft cloth. Hold onto the door or drawer with a soft cloth to prevent smudge marks from your gloves.
- 5). Sand areas of the cabinets frames that are scuffed, using a hand-held sander. Wipe down with a damp cloth and wait for the surface to dry.
- 6). Apply the stain to the cabinet frame. Wipe off excess stain after 10 minutes. Allow the stain to dry for six hours or however long your stain directions indicate.
- 7). Apply a protective finish to the cabinets, using a paintbrush. Let the finish dry completely. Install all your cabinet s drawers and doors after they are completely dry, and reattach hardware.
