How to Make a Child's Storage Bench

    • 1). Divide the plywood sheet into several pieces with your saw. Cut two pieces 48 inches by 14 1/2 inches to make the front and back of the bench. Saw two pieces 48 inches by 16 inches to make the top and bottom of the bench. Cut two pieces 14 1/2 inches square for the sides of the bench. Your finished bench will measure 48 inches wide, 16 inches deep and 14 1/2 inches high.

    • 2). Assemble the front, back and side pieces into a rectangular box. Overlap the long front and back pieces over the edges of the side pieces. Glue the edges of each piece with wood glue. Hold the edges together and hammer in finishing nails to secure them; use a nail gun if you have one for faster work.

    • 3). Turn the assembled rectangle upside down. Spread wood glue along the perimeter edges. Place the bottom piece of plywood on top of the glued rectangle. Secure it by driving finishing nails through all the edges. Turn the box over so the bottom piece is on the bottom.

    • 4). Sand off any rough edges or dried glue.

    • 5). Paint the storage box in a bright color, or use different colors for each side if you prefer. Paint the final piece of plywood, which will be the lid.

    • 6). Attach the piano hinge to the underside of the lid piece with screws. Attach the other side of the hinge to the top edge of the back of the box.
