- Pregnant women are at a greater risk for developing melasma, which is discoloration of the skin, when exposed to UV rays. While this is not dangerous, it is unsightly.
- UV rays can decrease the amount of folic acid in the bloodstream, which is a necessary element for a baby's nervous system development.
- Increased body temperatures that may occur while in a tanning bed may be dangerous for a developing baby.
- Lying on your back while pregnant can put pressure on blood vessels and restrict blood flow.
- Sweating a lot, as can happen in a tanning bed, may lead to dehydration which can be particularly dangerous during pregnancy.
