Tips When Driving in Fog

As fall season is creeping among us, so is the early morning and late night fog. As commuters are waking up early in the morning in an effort to get to work, fog is settling in. This can make it hard for drivers to travel safely to work. Vision is limited when there is fog, forcing drivers to driver slower and more carefully. When the weather is extremely foggy, the chances for car accidents increase.

In order to stay safe when the fog begins to kick in, here are some safety tips for those foggy mornings:

Turn on your low beams. Even if there is light out, turn you headlights on. Vision may be extremely limited which means other drivers might have a harder time seeing you. In fact, vehicles struggle to see each other. If you turn on your high beams, the light will just end up reflecting off the fog and make visibility even worse. Use your low beams so other drivers will be aware of where your vehicle is on the road.

Use wipers and defrosters. If need be, turn on your wipers and defrosters to increase vision. Often, frost and water may build up on windows which will greatly affect a driver's ability to drive in a careful manner.

Drive slower. If vision is hard, then drive slower. It will not do anyone good if you chose to speed down the road when it is foggy. Speeding and fog can contribute to serious personal injuries when a driver is being reckless. Also, when fog surrounds your vehicle, it will make you feel as if you're going slower when in fact you are going too fast. Watch your speedometer and for other cars.

Listen to traffic. If you can't see oncoming cars, turn off your radio and listen for traffic. When vision is limited, tap into your other senses and use common sense to assess whether there is a nearby vehicle or not. Don't get distracted by your music and radio. Put safety first and turn off your radio to hear other cars.

Driving in fog is dangerous and risky. But fog cannot stop drivers from travelling on the road to get to work and school. Since commuting is still essential to making it into work and school, then safe driving must be taken into account. These tips will hopefully help drivers realize the need for safe and careful driving while out on freeways and highways.
