SR22 Insurance Information
- An SR-22 is paperwork that your insurance company files with your state's DMV office to prove that you are carrying the required amount of insurance.
- According to Progressive, a national insurance provider, a SR-22 requirement can last up to three years. You must keep your SR-22 filing current for as long as the court that sentenced you specifies.
- If you cancel your policy or fail to make a payment while under an SR-22 requirement, the insurance company must inform your state's DMV office and your driving privileges will be suspended.
- If you move to a different state---even one that does not require SR-22 filings---you must still keep the insurance minimums that are required in the state you were convicted in, even if your new state's requirements are lower.
