- 1). Hire a rental car that is both properly equipped and capable of towing a trailer. This means it must be powerful enough to do so and have the necessary hitch. You should be able to get the rental car you need by specifying to the service agent that you will be towing. Be very clear about this. Many recent vehicles are not capable of mounting a trailer hitch. If a rental company has included a hitch on a vehicle, it should be capable of towing a trailer.
- 2). Back the vehicle up so is very near the trailer. It is helpful to have someone guide you.
- 3). Raise the trailer so it is right over the car's hitch. This is done with a crank or electronically.
- 4). Lower it onto the car's hitch. The car's hitch is ball-shaped; the trailer's hitch is concave so it will fit right in.
- 5). Put the pin in the lock.
- 6). Fasten the safety chains.
- 7). Attach the wiring to your rental car.
- 8). Test the brake lights. Again, this is a good time to use a partner.
