Create Your Own Football Jersey

    • 1). Know the rules. Most state high school associations, college conferences and youth leagues have rules on what kinds of fabrics can be used. For example, most college leagues have banned "tear away" jerseys because they allowed players to break a tackle more easily. If a league only requires you to use a micro-hole jersey, go with that. If it requires something more, go with that.

    • 2). Choose your colors. Most sporting goods stores and online retail shops have a wide variety of colors to choose from. Many coaches try to limit jerseys to two colors--a base color and another for arm piping, stripes and numbers. However, many youth teams are starting to copy the trendier styles seen in colleges in the last few years of multi-layered uniforms, so there is some room to choose.

    • 3). Count your numbers. You will need numbers on the back and front of a jersey. A general rule of thumb is that a number be at least half the size of the jersey on the back, and a little smaller on the front. Shoulder pad numbers often cost extra.

    • 4). Check the arm length. Again, your league rules may have restrictions, but arm length is key. Generally speaking, a jersey should be able to wrap around shoulder pads snuggly with a little bit of sleeve hanging over the biceps.
