Do-It-Yourself Pest Control

    Chemical and Chemical-free Applications

    • In addition to manufactured chemicals, chemical-free solutions to pest control, such as orange oil and herbal extracts, are available. These natural applications will either retard or kill pests.

    Traps

    • Traps are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes. Traps can be used to control insects and rodents. Closed traps, some of which resemble rocks, trap and kill pests inside a chamber. If you have pets or children, it is safer to use closed traps, which lock the bait and poison inside.

    Building Maintenance

    • Pests can enter a home through holes or cracks in the foundation or siding. Inspect your home to determine any possible entry points. Fill any small holes and cracks with caulk or foam. Entry points can include areas where utilities enter a home, and around windows and doors. Cover larger gaps with wood or metal grating. Keep bushes and other plant life groomed, and clear all debris away from your home.
