• Stump removal services have grinding machines that cut the stump from the top with a special saw that grinds away the wood to the surface of the ground. This is the fastest and most efficient method.
  
  

Natural Options

• Over a period of years, the stump will naturally decay and decompose. To hasten the process, regularly covering the stump with soil or mulch helps, as does covering it with nitrogen-enriched fertilizers. Commercial stump-decay mixtures are available but generally do not decompose the stump much faster than naturally available substances.
  
  

Digging Up the Stump

• For large stumps, a backhoe is required for digging. Small stumps can be dug up by hand, although this is a long and tedious process commonly complicated by deep roots.
