What Is the Difference Between a G-Van and an Express Van?

    Model Numbers

    • Since 1996, the model numbers are 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500. Before 1996, model numbers were G-10, also known as the 1/2 ton, G-20, the 3/4 ton and G-30, the 1 ton. Due to the model numbers, these were sometimes called G-Series Vans or G-Vans.

    Model Names

    • Since 1996, all versions of this van sold by Chevrolet are named Express. From 1971 to 1995, names used include Sport Van, Chevy Van and Beauville. GMC vans sold since 1996 are named Savanna. Earlier names included Rally Wagon and Vandura.

    Tips

    • There are only cosmetic differences between the Chevrolet and GMC brands. Model names provide little or no information about the vehicle. The model number describes the general carrying capacity. To compare GM vans, you also need to know the wheel base, overall length and if the van was built for cargo, passengers, or converted from cargo to passenger.
