How to Calculate the Square Feet of Land
- 1). Acquire a survey of your land that will display an accurate schematic of your land perimeter. If you do not care about absolute precision, you can draw a sketch of your land's layout and measure the length of each side in feet using a tape measure.
- 2). Subdivide the land into basic shapes, such as rectangles and triangles.
- 3). Calculate the area of each section. For rectangular sections, multiply the width times the height. For triangular sections, multiply the base times the height, and divide the measurement by two. As an example, if you had a 100-foot by 50-foot rectangular section and a 50-foot by 50-foot triangular section, you would have areas of 5,000 and 1,250 square feet, respectively.
- 4). Add each section area to calculate the total area. In the example, your total would be 6,250 square feet.
