What you need to know about choosing website

So, you've decided you need a website, but have no idea what to do next ?

Firstly you need to ascertain what you want from your website, is it just an advertisement and web prescence, or will it have some / a lot of interactivity ?

You can pay a couple of hundred pounds to thousands depending on your requirements.

If you just want a few pages that don't change ( known as a static website) you should only have to spen two to three hundred pounds and all types of web design companies would be able to do this easily and quickly.

It would even be worth investigating easy to build online websites you can make yourself. Although be wary of any hidden costs that are common in such schemes.

If you want a website where the content is contiually changing , and you want to be able to edit it yourself, you should request quotes for a website with a 'content managemnt system' where you can update it easily without having to pay a web designer each time you want to make an edit / addition. Expect to pay around £500 for such a site from most web designers.

Ecommerce is the next big step , where you actually sell online.  Again expect this to have a content management sytem, where you can change the content and administer the ecommerce without any restrictions. Expect to pay at least a thousand pounds for a decent ecommerce site.

These are the three most  common types of websites, but there are many others , such as job boards, estate agencies, blogs.

The level of cost is usually  in proportion to the amount of user functionality required by the user. Especially if it is  not an 'off the shelf' solution and would require a lot of hand coding. So if your website is a completely new idea with new functions, expect to pay a lot .

Finding web companies is not difficult. It's often best to choose a local company, so you always meet the people involved. Alternatively there are a number of freelance websites where you can post your requirenments which are then put out to tender and get quotes from lots of diffrent agnecies / designers.
