  Winters are cold and can be very snowy, with precipitation from December to March averaging a total of 14.8 inches on the coast to 15.2 inches inland. That translates to roughly 40 inches of snow in Boston and 70 inches of snow in Worcester over the course of the winter. A very snowy winter will have more than 100 inches of snow. The temperature averages around 20 to 30 F. Wintery weather begins in late November or early December, and ends in mid to late March.
  
  

Spring

  Spring in Massachusetts is muddy and wet, even if it doesn't rain much. Average precipitation from April to May totals 6.84 inches on the coast and 8.27 inches inland. Spring, especially late March and early April, seems wetter than it is due to the melting snow. The temperature averages 45 to 60 F. Spring weather begins in the last week of March or first week of April, and ends in the second half of May.
  
  

Summer

  Summer in Massachusetts can be surprisingly warm. Summery weather usually begins in the last week of May or first week of June, and lasts through mid September (although nights in August and especially September begin to feel chilly and fall-like). The average temperature in the summer is 70 to 80 F with an average precipitation from June to August averaging 9.65 inches on the coast and 12.3 inches inland.
  
  

Fall

  The foliage in Massachusetts is especially famous. The trees turn bright shades of red, orange and yellow as the temperature drops. Fall weather begins in mid-September and ends in mid to late November. The average temperature in the fall is 45 to 60 F, nights however can drop below 40 F.
