Peg Board Projects for a Shop

    Supplies

    • Pegboard is the obvious supply needed for these shop projects. It typically comes in large sheets so a saw is also needed to cut the pegboard to the correct size for each project. Pegboard hardware comes in a variety of styles including hooks, shelves, bins, rings for holding containers and tool holders. They fit into the holes of the pegboard, proving a secure spot for various shop items. D ring hangers provide a sturdy hanging option for the pegboards. Wood glue, wood scraps and paint round out the supply list for pegboard projects.

    Project Ideas

    • Turn the pegboard area into a message center for the shop. Drill a small hole near the end of one side of a wooden clothes pin. Insert and glue a piece of a 1/4 inch dowel into the hole. When the dowel is placed into a hole on the pegboard, the clothes pin becomes a clip to hold notes, blueprints, instructions and other important documents.

A tool organizer gives each item in the shop a specific home. To dress up a plain piece of pegboard, apply a coat of paint to its surface and add a simple frame made from scrap wood around its edge. Place the tools on top of the pegboard as it rests on a table to get an idea of where to insert the pegboard hardware for hanging items.

If the doors of the shop cabinets have a recessed area, cut a piece of pegboard to fit it. Add lath strips to the back of the pegboard to create space between it and the door. This allows the pegboard hardware to fit into the holes. Use wood glue to attach the pegboard to the inside of the door. The pegboard hardware allows you to hang small items on the inside of the cabinet doors, keeping them handy but out of sight.

    Hanging Options

    • D rings or other sturdy hanging hardware provide a simple hanging option for the pegboard projects surrounded by a wooden frame. Attach them to the back of the pegboard frame, and hang them on nails or screws placed into the shop wall. The frame provides enough space between the wall and pegboard to allow the hooks to fit in the holes.

Another hanging option is to create a wood framework on the wall. Determine the size of the pegboard and cut wood strips the same length. Screw these strips horizontally into the wall, making sure to put the screws into the studs. Add strips of wood vertically between the horizontal pieces for additional stability. Screw the pegboard to the wood framework. The wood provides an anchor for the pegboard and leaves a gap between the pegboard and wall so the hooks fit in easily.
