Ancient people built historical monuments for practical, spiritual and ritual purposes. These structures teach today's people about how humans worked and lived during ancient times. Instead of simply reading about ancient monuments, travel to see them and experience the greatness of their history. - Stonehenge is an ancient Celtic monument that is theorized to have been built by the ancient Druids in Britain. It is comprised of a central vertical circle of stones surrounded by a circle of outer vertical stones. Although no one knows for certain why the stones were placed in the patterns or location in which they stand, it is thought that they were of spiritual or ritual significance. Stonehenge was built approximately 3000 years ago, and is located near Salisbury, England.
- The Roman Colosseum is an ancient historical monument that was built to house and showcase gladiatorial events for the leaders and citizens of Ancient Rome. When visiting the Colosseum, you can tour the rooms and chambers that were once used by the gladiators readying themselves to fight--each other or wild beasts. Some of the rooms in the Colosseum were also used as sleeping chambers when the gladiators were not participating in a gladiatorial event. The Colosseum was constructed in 80 A.D., and is located in the heart of Rome, Italy.
- The Anasazi Cliff Dwellings are located in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and were thought to have been built thousands of years ago by the ancient native peoples of North America. You can visit these ancient ruins and walk inside the rooms where ancient native peoples cooked, slept and lived. The Anasazi Cliff Dwellings are thought to have been built about 700 years ago by the native peoples living in Manitou Springs.
- The Great Pyramids at Giza were constructed in Cairo, Egypt in 2650 B.C. to contain the sarcophagi of the pharaohs of the time. Although there are debates about how the pyramids were constructed, the power that the pyramids imbue is awe-inspiring. Although you can visit certain sections of the Great Pyramids at Giza, such as the Great Gallery, and the Queen and King's Chambers, climbing the pyramids are strictly forbidden.
