      Over 400 universities in the United States offer Master's programs in Counseling, though some programs are called "Counseling Psychology" or "Counseling and Guidance" or the like. Though each graduate program has its own approach and focus, all are geared to help students launch careers as therapists, school guidance counselors, family therapists, or other mental-health providers, and require a combination of course work and clinical practice.

    Adler School of Professional Psychology

    • The renowned Adler School offers an MA in Counseling Psychology at both its campuses in Chicago and in Vancouver (the requirements are slightly different). With full-time study, the program takes two calendar years to complete.

    University of Wisconsin - River Falls

    • The UW College of Education offers a Master of Science in Education degree in School Counseling. The program uses the "reflective model" approach, integrating personal development with professional development. The program requires 40 semester credits of work; part-time students taking 6 credits each term and additional coursework over the summer usually take two years, including summers, to finish.

    Argosy University

    • Argosy University offers an MA in Counseling Psychology at campuses in Seattle, Washington and Alameda, California, training students for careers as marriage counselors, family therapists, career counselors, guidance counselors, and counseling psychologists. The courses are designed to be taken in sequence, with first-year coursework focusing on the theoretical foundations of counseling.
