How to Troll With Wire Lines
- 1). Attach a barrel swivel to the monel wire line on yoru fishing reel. Use a Bimini Twist to attach the swivel to the wire line.
- 2). Tie a 15 foot length of 40-pound test monofilament fishing line to the barrel swivel to use as a shock leader. Use a Uni knot to attach the line to the swivel. Moisten the knot before pulling it tight. Trim excess line from the knot with scissors.
- 3). Attach a deep diving crankbait to the end of the shock leader with a Palomar knot. Choose a crankbait with a lip designed to make the bait dive to the desired depth in the water where your target fish are feeding.
- 4). Cast the rigged line into the water behind a boat. Move the boat forward at a speed generally less than 4 miles per hour. Stop the boat periodically to add life-like movement to the lure.
- 5). Raise the rod tip when a fish strikes the lure to set the hook. Loosen the drag, if needed, to compensate for the lack of stretch in the wire line and to prevent a break-off along the shock leader.
