How to Identify the Peso

    • 1). Look at the shape of the coin. The single peso is a completely circular coin that has smooth edges and is 21 mm in diameter.

    • 2). Examine the design. The single peso has the Mexican national shield with the text "United Mexican States" inscribed directly above it.

    • 3). Check the denomination. The single peso has a "$1" on its face. The $2 Peso has almost identical design except for the denomination.

    • 4). Compare colors. Single peso coins have two colors of metal: a stainless steel alloy around the outside, and a bronze alloy on the inside.
