Monuments at Quantico

    • The Marine Corps Base Quantico is in eastern Virginia's Prince William County and one of the largest marine bases in the United States. The base is known as the "Crossroads of the Marine Corps." Aside from being a marine headquarters, Quantico features Semper Fi Memorial Park and the Quantico National Cemetery. Both sites and the base have monuments erected in honor of past and present U.S. Marines Corps personnel.

    Crusading for Right

    • The Crusading for Right memorial is in front of Butler Hall, which is located on the Quantico Marine Corps Base. This memorial is dedicated to the three U.S. marine divisions who fought in France during World War I: the Sixth Machine Gun Battalion, Sixth Regiment and Fifth Regiment. The statue at this memorial depicts a World War I marine wearing a backpack and is carrying a 1903 Springfield rifle and bayonet. The statue was created by French sculptor, Charles Raphael Peyre. Crusading for Right is a part of the "Iron Mike" memorials, a collection of monuments dedicated to U.S. Marines. Other "Iron Mike" memorials are in Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Parris Island, South Carolina, and Belleau, France.

    Force Recon Memorial

    • The Force Recon Memorial is in Quantico's Semper Fi Memorial Park and was presented in November, 2010. This 6-foot high granite slab, also referred to as a "Memorial Obelisk," is dedicated to all members of the military who served in Force Reconnaissance units since World War II. Force Reconnaissance units, or Force Recon, are personnel responsible for gathering intelligence on enemy armed forces. The granite slab is 10 inches thick and 32 inches wide. The top of the memorial has the Marine Corps emblem, which features an eagle and anchor attached to a globe. Below the emblem is a one-paragraph narrative that explains the history of the U.S. Marines Force Recon units.

    Edson's Raiders Memorial

    • Situated in Quantico National Cemetery, the Edson's Raiders Memorial is dedicated to the First Marine Raider Battalion, who were under the command of Gen. Merritt Edson, whose code name during "Red Mike." This battalion fought during World War II and gained notoriety during World War II for their actions against the Japanese Imperial Army at the Brigit Solomon Islands. More than 800 men served in this battalion in the years of 1942 and 1943. Built in 1989, the Edson's Raiders Memorial was the first monument built in Quantico National Cemetery. The memorial is a small, rock-like structure with a plaque embedded in its center. The plaque on the memorial explains the victory of Edson's Raiders in the Battle of Bloody Ridge.
