Childhood Obesity and Dental Caries in Homeless Children

Childhood Obesity and Dental Caries in Homeless Children

Theoretical Framework

Gelberg, Andersen, and Leake's (2000) Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations guides the development of this study. The Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations model contains three major components: population characteristics, health behaviors, and health outcomes. Population characteristics are individual determinants that affect health care use. Health behaviors include personal health practices and the use of services. Health outcomes evaluate perceived and measured health status and satisfaction about the services (Gelberg et al., 2000). This model was used to guide this study with a focus on population characteristics and health status (homelessness, obesity, and dental caries).
