How to Use a Dremel 396 Multipro Rotary Tool

    • 1). Sit or stand at a work bench in a safe area. Remove any nearby flammable liquids, dust or gas from the area. Remove any loose clothing or jewelry. Wear safety glasses.

    • 2). Attach an accessory to the tip of the Dremel. Choose one that you would like to practice using.

    • 3). Plug in the Dremel 396. Make sure the power switch is off before you plug it in.

    • 4). Hold the Dremel 396 in your hand to get used to its weight. Hold the tool between your thumb and forefinger as you would a pencil, keeping it away from your face. Slide the power switch to "On."

    • 5). Select a low speed of 5,000 RPM. Lower the Dremel 396 onto a piece of scrap metal or other practice material. Use the Dremel's speed to do the work for you. If you're making a cut with the spinning accessory, guide the tool gently over the surface without applying excessive pressure. Penetrate the material by moving the Dremel back and forth like a paint brush until it breaks through the surface. Use the Dremel slowly to minimize errors caused by poor control.

    • 6). Practice using the Dremel on a variety of materials at different speeds with different attachments. Cut at low speed plastic and other material that melts easily. Cut wood, iron and steel at high speeds. Aluminum and copper, zinc or lead alloys can be cut at various speeds depending on the work being done. Clean with the buffing attachment at speeds below 15,000 RPM to avoid damaging surfaces.

    • 7). Select the correct speed and attachment for the project on which you'll be working. Make sure you have practiced enough and are comfortable using the Dremel 396 before using it on any major projects.
