How to Find Out If One Has Ever Claimed the Hope Credit

- 1). Write the years you went to school or someone related to you went to school and you paid their educational expenses. Ignore any years prior to 1998.
- 2). Complete and mail IRS Form 4506-T for the years you could have used the credit. The form is self-explanatory. The periods are the ones you list in Step 1 and the tax forms are IRS Form 1040. The Internal Revenue Service provides the mail address on Form 4506-T. The location you send the form to depends on where you lived when you submitted your most recent tax return.
- 3). Receive the transcripts from the Internal Revenue Service and look through them to see if you ever claimed the Hope Credit.
