Procedure for Handwashing

    Washing

    • Use very warm water, about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Wet your hands thoroughly and apply soap. Lather your hands, including between all your fingers, for 20 seconds. A good way to time 20 seconds is to sing "Happy Birthday" twice. After lathering, rinse your hands completely.

    Drying

    • Dry your hands on a disposable paper towel or use an air hand dryer. Do not use reusable cloth towels, because they can contribute to spreading germs or contaminate your recently cleaned hands. Dry completely.

    Sanitize

    • After hands are thoroughly washed and dried, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Apply the amount recommended by the directions on the bottle and rub into your hands. Do not rinse or wipe your hands afterward, simply rub the sanitizer into your hands until it is completely absorbed.
