Your Novel Is Bogged Down, Near Death - Wake It Up!
Your novel is bogged down, near death.
Wake it up! I've learned over and over that there is only one way for me to do that.
That's just me.
I write plays, short stories and am now writing a novel.
Of course your novel is still within you, down there chugging and churning around.
You can feel it working its way to fruition! But what can you do? You are stuck.
Nothing that comes to your mind can fix it.
You think that you will just give it up...
give up writing anything! But hold on.
You've started and you don't want to give it up.
You are a writer.
You are not a quitter.
You probably had a good idea in the beginning when you decided to write this novel.
All you need is a little nudge.
Here it is.
I was lucky enough years ago to find the solution for me.
I've read all the books on this subject, well, most of them.
Whether I'm writing a play, a short story or a novel, I tell myself that I must reveal myself.
Don't be afraid of this.
Remember that we are all made of the same stuff.
I set my mind on the character who is blocking my progress.
I profile him again, maybe again and again.
Going back to his childhood, I don't overlook my own.
If I did such and such, if I did not do this or that, if I felt this way or that, whatever I did, said or thought, he probably had the same joys, the same failings.
I drag up memories from my past and let them be his.
You are bound to hit on something in your past that will relate to your character's dead-end and this fresh knowledge will probably show you where you need to go with it.
And when I find my character, I find my story, I tell myself.
I keep remembering that my brother, a psychiatrist, once told me, "I believe that God created us so that we could entertain Him.
" Go ahead.
Live it up.
Let's entertain Him.
Writing is a personal thing and you guard your methods.
You may have better ways.
But if not, try this one.
And good luck.
