The Luggage Limits for International Air Travel

    Weight

    • Each airline has its own weight limit for checked luggage and it depends largely on the destination and class of travel. Most flights going to and from the U.S. have a checked bag weight limit of 50 lbs. for economy, which rises to 70 lbs. for first or business class.

    Quantity

    • As of 2010 most airlines flying to Europe and Asia allowed one checked bag free but charged for even the first bag to Mexico and Canada. The majority of airlines showed much greater leniency to business and first class passengers. American Airlines, for example, allows three bags free in first and business class.

    Size

    • Most international airlines limit bags to 62 linear inches, i.e. length+width+height must be less than 62 inches. They mostly limit carry-on luggage to 45 linear inches and some restrict the carry-on luggage by weight.
