The Facility:
The New Orleans Arena opened in 1999 as a venue for sports and events suitable to a different configuration than that available at the Superdome. It was completed at a cost of $114 million dollars. The Arena is adjacent to the Superdome, and parking in the Superdome lot is available. The Arena has 24,650 square feet of column-free space, 290 feet long by 85 feet wide.
It seats 17,200 people for basketball, and over 18,500 for concerts and other activities. There are 56 executive suites and a "Super Suite" for 140 persons.
The first sporting event played there was a hockey game featuring the New Orleans Brass. In 2002, the Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans, and quickly became another important sports symbol in the city. The New Orleans Voodoo, the city's AFL team, is also at home in the Arena.
More Than Just Sports:
In addition to sports, the Arena hosts trade shows, concerts, circuses, convention shows, and much more. In 2008, it was the scene of the NBA All Star game. In 2007 and 2008, it was the site of the Arena Bowl. It has been the scene of concerts for Paul McCartney, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Billy Joel, and many more stars. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, it became the headquarters for emergency medical operations, and afterwards, although it did not suffer as badly as the Superdome, underwent significant refurbishment.
The Arena can be rented for private events; catering is available.
