How to Create an ACL

  • 1). Click the Windows "Start" button and right-click the "Computer" icon. Select "Manage" to open "Computer Management," which gives you the ability to control ACLs.

  • 2). Click "System Tools" to view a list of resources you can configure on your computer. Click "Shared Folders," then click "Shares." All of the shared folders and printers display in the right side of the window.

  • 3). Right-click the share you want to edit. Click "Properties." Notice the "Everyone" group is automatically added to the share's permissions. If you want to customize the ACL, click "Everyone" and click "Remove."

  • 4). Click the "Add" button. A new window opens. Type each username you want to have access to the folder. Click "OK."

  • 5). Click the user account in the ACL. Check each access permission you want to give to the user. For instance, if you want to give the user the ability to read but not edit the file, click "Read" but make sure the "Modify" permission is not selected. Repeat this step for each of the users in the ACL.

  • 6). Click "Apply" to save the changes. You can use these steps for each shared resource listed in Computer Management, including printers, scanners and shared hard drives.
