How to Stain Glass Light Fixtures
- 1). Remove the glass light fixtures that you wish to stain from the light fixtures. Some light fixtures feature pins that you can unscrew with your fingers, whereas others are secured by screws that you must unscrew with a screwdriver.
- 2). Spread a sheet of newspaper upon the surface on which you plan to work. Set the light fixtures atop the newspaper, which will protect your work surface from becoming damaged by spilled glass paint stain.
- 3). Pour a dab of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, and clean the glass with the alcohol, which will remove oils from your fingers and any other residues that may reside on the glass
- 4). Use painter's tape to tape the design you wish to follow to stain your glass light fixtures to the inside of the light fixtures. You can draw your own stained glass design, make your own with your computer's paint program and print it or locate a design on the Internet and print it.
- 5). Use a stained glass marker to trace the outline of the design onto your glass light fixtures. Most people prefer to use a black marker, but use another color like gold or white if you prefer. Allow the stained glass marker ink to dry completely before proceeding to paint; otherwise the glass paint stain will smear the black marker. Remove the taped design from inside your glass light fixture after the ink has dried.
- 6). Dip your paintbrush into the glass paint stain, and begin painting within the lines of your design. Alternate the colors in whatever pattern you prefer. Allow the stain to dry completely before touching it or reassembling your glass light fixture. Most stains take approximately 24 to 48 hours to dry, but read your stain's label for your specific manufacturer's specifications.
- 7). Reassemble your glass light fixture, which is now stained, once the stain is completely dry.
