- 1). Practice the correct way to lift objects. Lifting the incorrect way can make you susceptible to spinal disc problems. Place pressure on your legs and avoid lifting by using your back muscles.
- 2). Prevent falls. They are one of the leading causes of herniated discs. Avoid icy sidewalks and use railings when available.
- 3). Maintain good posture. Poor posture makes a person more susceptible to degenerative disc disease. Sit with your shoulders back and your spine straight.
- 4). Maintain a healthy weight. Overweight and obese individuals are more at risk for developing spinal disc problems because of the added stress on the back. Work with your doctor to plan a diet program and exercise routine.
- 5). Support your spine with a good mattress and pillow. Choose a medium firm mattress and a pillow that will not overextend your neck.
- 6). Get a massage. Regular massages can improve circulation and increase blood flow to the back, which can help you keep your spinal disc healthy.
