How to Put on a Wood Deck Railing
- 1). Measure the distance between the existing deck posts. Stretch your tape measure along one of the boards. Mark the measurement with a pencil. Measure and mark 2 more boards.
- 2). Place a board onto the chop saw. Hold the board against the back stop on the saw. Place the measurement mark under the blade. Cut through the board with the saw. Cut three boards to length.
- 3). Place one board between the posts 1 inch above the deck boards. Keep the outer face of the board flush with the outer face of the posts. Twist the board so that the narrow side faces down. Lay the level on the board to be sure it provides a flat surface.
- 4). Tap the board into place with a rubber mallet. Drive a screw at an angle through each end of the board and into the post. Attach the second board 36 inches above the surface of the deck boards. Keep the board vertical and flush with the outer edge of the posts.
- 5). Hold a picket up to the boards. Be sure top and bottom of the picket is flush with the upper and lower edges of the boards. Drive a screw through the top and bottom side of the picket to attach it to both boards. Attach a picket every 3 inches along the length of the boards.
- 6). Lay the last board on top of the railing to cover the upper edge of the top board and the tops of the pickets. Drive a screw through the board and into the top brace board every 18 inches along the length of the rail.
