How to Make a Magic Glass Block
- 1). Drill a 1/2-inch-wide hole in the side of block about 1 inch up from one of the bottom edges. Use a 1/2-inch diamond drill bit. Drill slowly, using light pressure. Have an assistant spray the drill bit with a squirt bottle full of water as you drill. This will prevent overheating of the drill bit and glass.
- 2). Rinse the inside of the block with warm running water. Pour the water out of the hole and turn the block so the hole is pointing down. Leave it to drain and dry overnight. If there is still moisture inside the block in the morning, leave it to dry until all moisture is gone. Depending on the humidity in the air, this could take several days.
- 3). Test a string of small Christmas lights by plugging them into the wall. You can use colored or white lights, blinking or steady. Make sure all of the lights on the string are working. If you find lights out, either replace the light bulbs or replace the light strand with a new strand.
- 4). Insert the end of the light strand into the hole in the bottom edge of the glass block. Continue to feed the light strand into the block until the only length that remains outside of the block is the length you need to plug it into the wall.
- 5). Decorate the front and the back of the glass block. Use paints, fabric, glass etching cream or clear mosaic tiles to decorate the blocks. Wrap the edges in a wide ribbon and tie a large bow to set on top to add additional flair.
