Remedies to Bring Down Acne Swelling
- Using soap on the skin causes the skin to dry out and become irritated. This is due to the fact that most commercially produced soaps and cleansers contain harsh chemicals and additives that cause an allergic reaction in the skin. One alternative is to cleanse the skin using a noncomedogenic oil, like olive oil. Spread 2 tbsp. of olive oil onto the skin, and massage the oil in deeply for 2 to 3 minutes. Lay a hot, wet washcloth over the skin, which will open the pores and allow them to drain out blockages, dirt and impurities. Once the cloth cools, use it to wipe off the oils and impurities. Cleanse the skin using oil as often as you would with soap, typically twice per day.
- Medicated acne creams, including those which contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, can cause inflammation and swelling when applied to the skin. This is because these chemical substances are incredibly irritating, and can even cause mild to moderate chemical burns on the skin. To reduce swelling while continuing to treat acne breakouts, you can apply diluted tea tree oil, which will not inflame the skin. Tea tree oil not only kills acne-causing bacteria on the face, but also reduces swelling and redness in the skin. Dip a cotton swab into pure tea tree oil, then dip it quickly into water. Wipe the swab over the areas of acne swelling and breakouts up to three times per day.
- When the skin is constantly bombarded with chemical creams and lotions, it can become dried out, irritated and swollen. To reduce swelling and prevent the skin from drying out in this manner, it is important to keep your skin properly hydrated. Place a few drops of a noncomedogenic oil--such as olive, castor or jojoba oil--into the palms of your hands, and spread it around your hands evenly. Gently pat the skin with the oily hands to distribute the oil lightly onto your face. Repeat twice per day.
