Weddings in Santorini

Santorini forms part of the Cyclades in the central Aegean Sea. Its volcano erupted in the 15th century B.C — as a result, the central section of the island sank into the sea. Every single rock on Santorini has taken an incredible journey from the bowels of the earth to take its place on the surface, driven by earth-shattering volcanic eruptions, to literally construct the island as we see it today. Aside from the awe and wonder with which it fills visitors, the Caldera is also a unique geological monument. Rising up on the east side of the island, its rocky, perilous cliffs are dotted with the white-washed villages of Fira, Imerovigli and Oia . The sunset from Oia or Imerovigli is a spectacle not to miss. The sun sets directly to the sea bathing the whole landscape in colors ranging from blue and purple to red and yellow. The caldera looks like burning, evoking the real eruptions of the past. And as the dark falls on the island, the view from caldera is fascinating; and if there is a full moon, the moon stream on the water look likes a road leading to the infinity. The island owes to the caldera its fame and originality.

This island of exceptional beauty was named "Kallisti" ("the most beautiful one") during antiquity, and has hosted great civilizations, the first being the Akrotiri civilisation, which we know of from the ash-buried and almost perfectly preserved prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, with its extraordinary wall-paintings and finds impressive for both their style and refined technique. Santorini is also studded with many chapels, as it's inhabitants during the Byzantine period built many churches.

It is not strange that Santorini is couples' favorite island for weddings ceremonies and honey-moon. The romantic atmosphere, the picturesque villages, the crimson sunsets create such an idyllic scenery, which make their wedding unforgettable.

Santorini is easily reached from Pireaus or Rafina by conventional or high speed ships or by flying dolphins. There is at least one ship per day in winter and more than two in summer.

There is good connection with the islands of the line, Paros, Naxos, Ios all year round, as well as with Thessaloniki, while in summer, it is also connected with Myconos, the islands of Northern Aegean, the Dodecanese and Crete.

The port is at Athinios bay, 9 km South of Fira, the capital of the island.

From the International airport of Athens El.Venizelos there are usually one or two flights to Santorini all year round, while in summer there are also charter flights.
