- 1). Pour the freshly expressed breast milk into a clean saucepan. Place a candy thermometer in the milk, and make sure that it does not touch the bottom of the pan.
- 2). Heat the breast milk on a stovetop to 180 degrees Fahrenheit or scalding. Stir constantly to evenly distribute the heat. You should see small bubbles forming around the edges of the pan, but do not let the milk boil.
- 3). Remove the saucepan from the stovetop. Cool the breast milk to room temperature. Pour the milk into glass bottles and store them immediately in the refrigerator or freezer.
