Ear Health in Dogs

    Examining Ears

    • While some dogs may sit still while you examine their ears, others will require a bit more work. One way is to place your dog on a table, using your body to keep him steady. When you examine your dog's ear, start by looking at the outside, fur-covered flap of the ear. Look for signs of excessive scratching, feeling the edges for any tears or other damage. Check for areas that may be swollen or sensitive to touch.

    Healthy Ears

    • In a healthy ear, the outer flap of the ear will not have damage, swelling or pain. When you lift up the ear flap, the inner part of the ear should be pink, and may also have some black discharge.

    Signs of Ear Problems

    • When you examine your dog's ear, if you notice that the ear flap or inner ear is red or has an odor or excessive discharge, your dog may have an ear infection or other ear problem. If your dog scratches at his ears or shakes and tilts his head a lot, this could be signs of ear problems. Your dog may also rub his ears against furniture or the floor. If you notice these signs, you should contact your veterinarian.

    Types of Ear Problems

    • The most common ear problems in dogs are usually a build up of wax, ear mites or ear infections. Wax build up can be removed carefully, though if there is a build up deep in your dog's ears, he should see the veterinarian for removal. Ear mites are tiny bugs that infest a dog's ear canals, though they may also be anywhere on his head. Ear mites cause irritation and inflammation. Ear infections are common problems for dogs, and can be a result of ear mites, diseases or allergies.

    Keeping Ears Healthy

    • If your dog has recurring ear infections, increase the air flow into the ear canal. Air flow can be increased by tweezing hairs around the opening of the ear or keeping ears tied or taped back. Ask your veterinarian if you should clean your dog's ears and the proper method to use for your dog. Keep in mind that excessive cleaning of your dog's ears could cause damage.
